He has distilled his essence on to the printed page, surely one of the hallmarks of literary greatness. That became compounded with typhoid fever, and he died the next year at his home, at the age of thirty-seven. She died in 1873, at age forty-four; her death certificate gives the causes as cardiac disease, apoplexy and alcoholism. Here his muse can soar. The love of quiet, of old books, and reverence for the past, finds its place in them, and if they be dreams, the reader does not care to be awakened. There is a single exception. His earliest poems were published in The Glasgow Citizen, whose proprietor and editor James Hedderwick became a patron and friend.

From his practical errors the writer learns something, if not always humility and amendment. Each page is checked manually before printing. Part of the problem with this collection is that it's so hard to fit into a mold.
