Divergent book 1 summary Rating: 9,3/10 195 reviews

Divergent is the first book in a trilogy of young adult dystopian novels written by Veronica Roth. Set in a future Chicago, the story follows the life of Beatrice "Tris" Prior, a sixteen-year-old who lives in a society divided into five factions based on personality traits. Tris is born into the Abnegation faction, which values selflessness and humility, but on the day of her Choosing Ceremony, she decides to leave her family and join the Dauntless faction, which values bravery and fearlessness.

As Tris begins her training to become a member of Dauntless, she discovers that she is divergent, meaning that she possesses traits from multiple factions. This is a dangerous secret in her society, as the government believes that being divergent means a person cannot be controlled and is therefore a threat to the stability of the society. Tris must keep her secret hidden while also trying to prove herself as a worthy member of Dauntless.

During her training, Tris becomes close with several other initiates, including Four, a Dauntless member who becomes her mentor and romantic interest. Tris also makes enemies with some of the other initiates, including a charismatic but manipulative member named Peter.

As Tris progresses through her training, she uncovers a conspiracy within the government to eliminate divergents. Along with Four and some of her other friends, Tris works to expose the conspiracy and bring down the corrupt government officials behind it. In the end, Tris and her friends succeed in their mission, but not without suffering personal losses and sacrifices.

Throughout the book, Tris grapples with themes of identity, loyalty, and the cost of standing up for what you believe in. The story is fast-paced and action-packed, with well-developed characters and an engaging plot that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Divergent by Veronica Roth Plot Summary

divergent book 1 summary

You CANNOT tell me that one faction rules the government. Specifically, the novel explores the themes typical to youthful adult fiction, such as adult authority and the transition from childhood to maturity, as well as wider motifs, like the place of violence and social constructs inside a post-apocalyptic society. Four pulls Tris to her feet, and Tris feels the warmth of his skin for a brief moment. The novel follows her through her initiation training, during which Tris discovers that their society is not as harmonious as she once believed. Or maybe she just wanted to copy Mockingjay, that too, of course. ¹ You know what this idea is missing? Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless selflessness and bravery respectively , it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four.
