The Deaf President Now (DPN) book tells the story of a movement that took place at Gallaudet University in 1988. In 1988, the board of trustees at Gallaudet University announced that they had selected a hearing person to be the next president of the university. This decision was met with outrage and disbelief by many members of the deaf community, who saw it as a betrayal and a sign that the university was not truly committed to serving the needs of its deaf students.
In response, a group of students, faculty, and alumni at Gallaudet organized a protest called Deaf President Now (DPN). When I sat down this morning to write my review of this book, it quickly got so unwieldy that I decided to just spin it off into a standalone essay for the general public at my blog. Despite the fact that there are countless minority groups across the globe, these groups still face prejudice from entitled people. In a moment of rage and disappointment hundreds of students and staff fled to Florida Avenue with the intent of protest. Both staff and students were excited for the announcement of the first deaf president of the university. The Deaf President Now movement called for deaf representation at the school for the deaf, something that should have been a given in the first place.

I read all the chapters that directly described the protest then stopped. However, I learned a lot, and it definitely provides food for thought regarding how to organize successful protests. This narrative of the uprising, reconstructed through interviews with student leaders, administrators, and others, shows a campus charged with a sense of political change almost a year before the protest began. In this chapter, Critical Race Theory CRT is applied to an examination of racism in contemporary education.
