Tragedy strikes and over 400 slaves are sold left and right. Due to content and language in this book, I would say that this book is appropriate for high school to adult readers. The last sentence is almost as if she passes away but that's only my view on it. This is called suspense. Emma a young slave is sold away from her family into another plantation in Kentucky. The anguish I felt reading this knowing this day really happened and while these particular enslaved characters were not real their experiences were. Lester does this in such an effective way that there is no confusion when switching characters, but instead it builds more interest and understanding for the reader. Butler would not sell her back into slavery, is standing by a stove reminiscing about her past while making tea for her granddaughter, who is at the table working on a history project about slavery.
This book was so good. Julius Lester tells the story of several characters including Emma, a slave owned by Pierce Butler and caretaker of his two daughters, and Pierce, a man with a mounting gambling debt and household to protect. Some readers may initially have trouble connecting Emma, the children's nursemaid, to her parents, Mattie and Will, the master's manservant.
