The author of A Boy Called It is Dave Pelzer. Pelzer is an American author who is best known for his memoirs about his difficult and abusive childhood. A Boy Called It is the first book in Pelzer's series of memoirs, which also includes The Lost Boy, A Man Named Dave, and Help Yourself.

Pelzer was born on December 29, 1960, in San Francisco, California. His childhood was marked by severe physical, emotional, and psychological abuse at the hands of his mother, who he refers to as "Mother" in his memoirs. Pelzer's father was also emotionally abusive and did little to protect him from the abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother.

In A Boy Called It, Pelzer writes about his experiences growing up in a household where he was constantly belittled, beaten, and humiliated. He describes being subjected to frequent acts of violence, including being burned with cigarettes, hit with objects, and locked in the basement for extended periods of time. Pelzer also writes about the psychological abuse he suffered, including being told that he was worthless and unlovable.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Pelzer was able to find the strength to overcome his abusive upbringing and build a better life for himself. He eventually left home and joined the Air Force, where he received the support and guidance he needed to begin healing from the trauma of his childhood.

Pelzer's memoirs have been widely praised for their honesty and bravery, and have helped to shed light on the devastating impact of child abuse. A Boy Called It has become a classic of the memoir genre and has been widely read and adapted for stage and screen. Pelzer's other memoirs have also been successful and have helped to further raise awareness about the importance of protecting children from abuse.

The writing was cliched I've sat with this book on my desk for a couple weeks, unable to decide what I would write for a review. Second, critics suspect Pelzer exaggerated details of his abuse. You can actually feel what he as a child went through. I experienced this book in a fairly odd way, during a week-long cheerleading camp my sophomore year of high school. Regarding his mother, she seemed to display traits of Borderline Personality Disorder, which of course no one can actually say for sure.

Anyway, this isn't about me so instead I'll say that no matter what, I'm glad I read it. He was pratically stabbed in the belly and had to go through such pain. Most of you would never treat a child like that anyway, and if you would, no amount of reading about it would change your opinion that you're in the 'right'. . Apparently, he makes or made his money selling his book at talks he gives. In 1994, Dave was the only American to be honored as The Outstanding Young Persons of the World! She got my Mother to sign some paperwork two days later, and I never know what it was until I was 18 years old.

If the mother allowed him to eat, he would eat only the leftovers in the dog foods. He does not say he was abused. Hypothermia can set in at temperatures around 70 degrees but that's after extended exposure hours and even days. If his mother had had some kind of reason, just something that set him apart, it would at least be part of an explanation even if it's no excuse, but it seemed totally random. When David is sent to earn money by mowing lawns and does not bring home the assigned quota, he is subjected to a new punishment.

A Child Called "It" Summary

Mother continues denying Dave regular meals, and forces him to wear the same clothes to school every day, to the point where Dave begins to smell horrible, and decides that he needs to steal food to survive. Parents with personality disorders frequently choose one or two children to focus all their rage and self hate on. This also confuses family members and forces children to take sides, in a sense; side with the 'nice mother' or side with the 'bad brother who gets beatings. For his efforts, Dave was twice selected as Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. Also, once Dave was recused from his home, his mother turned the abuse onto the youngest son, and that son wrote a book as well, confirming many of of Dave's accounts. Don, based on your use of multiple exclamation points, I can assess that you simply don't want it to be true.

A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer Plot Summary

When I see her now I have to give myself a mental shake and ask myself if my memories are made up. The book is a litany of horrors. When David tries to explain that he was only trying to join his family and be with her, his mother stuffs a bar of soap in his mouth. The only thing that keeps him alive are his dreams, wanting a happy and safe family, and also being someone. I can see an abuser forcing a child into a freezing shower for 10-15 minutes but to make them lie in freezing water for hours on end? I don't know enough about the controversy to speculate, so I will just give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume this is indeed a factual memoir of his childhood. A child who has undergone as horrific treatment as David described most likely won't be able to remember all the events described.

It took many years of struggle, deprivation and despair to find his dream and then to make something of himself in the world. The odd thing was, if we were out together, at a movie or something, men would hit on her and never even glance at me. . If he did exaggerate or fabricate some of the incidents then this would explain the large amounts of detail. Granted, the part where he is forced to eat feces is extremely horrible and I couldn't imagine it but child abuse can come in all forms.

You can give a child hope. I praise God, he is still alive today to tell his story! People seem to want the how-to rather than just the logical facts pointed out so here it goes. He is truly an inspiration and deserves the utmost respect for what he is doing now. This is most definitely a ficticious book. . My mother was my Grandmother's daughter-in-law, so she did not have to do anything for her. They play and enjoy themselves for those few glorious days. While I am not completely sure about the legitimacy of all of the claims written in Pelzer's books, I did want to comment regarding the ability of children to survive and the way they deal with things.

I have been with her, just walking down a busy street or drinking a coke on a terrace, when some creep came up to her and grabbed her. My grandfather was apparently a wonderful man.
