Considering the obvious appeal to cast Carrey so thoroughly against-type like this, he's left adrift in a film that isn't nearly worthy of his talents - or those of fellow cast members Marton Csokas and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The temptation for cuteness must have been incredibly high for all involved, and for a while it seems like that might be the route they take. Their ire is unearned: Carrey gives the best performance of his career up to this point as Chip, a socially-awkward and possibly sociopathic cable installer. While his contemporary male comedians Adam Sandler, shudder flaunted their manhood, endorsing frat-bro behavior. Eh… Carrey gets bonus points just for not sounding like Nic Cage, who gives one of his strangest, most confusing performances, sounding like a greaser addicted to helium. Their chemistry is undeniably potent, and they play off each other so well. And Carrey turns the volume way down. Devoid of any and all traces of competence, they do stupid better than anyone else. Jim Carrey, however, is transcendent. He does, however, get to yell about non-fat muffins.
