"Aladdin" is a classic fairy tale from the Middle East, likely originating in the region now known as Iraq. It has been retold and adapted countless times over the centuries, and is probably most familiar to many people through the Disney animated film of the same name. However, the original story is quite different from the Disney version, and is actually quite a bit darker and more complex.
In the original tale, Aladdin is a poor young man who lives in a small town in the Middle East. He is clever and resourceful, but also quite lazy and prone to getting into trouble. One day, a mysterious stranger arrives in town and offers Aladdin a magical lamp in exchange for his help in retrieving a valuable treasure. Aladdin agrees, and the stranger gives him the lamp and leads him to a hidden cave where the treasure is supposed to be.
Inside the cave, Aladdin finds the treasure, but is also confronted by a group of fierce demons who guard it. He manages to outsmart them and escape with the treasure, but on the way out he accidentally drops the lamp, which breaks and releases a genie who has been trapped inside. The genie offers to grant Aladdin three wishes in exchange for his freedom, and Aladdin quickly uses his first wish to become rich and powerful.
With his second wish, Aladdin asks the genie to build him a beautiful palace, and with his third wish he asks to marry the princess, who he has fallen in love with. The genie grants all of these wishes, and Aladdin becomes a wealthy and respected member of society. However, things do not stay peaceful for long. The princess's father, the sultan, becomes jealous of Aladdin's success and plots to kill him and take the lamp for himself.
Aladdin is able to outsmart the sultan and keep the lamp, but he is eventually betrayed by his own wicked uncle, who tricks him into giving up the lamp and takes it for himself. Both protagonists also lose everything at one point, until they recover their magic gift and are able to use it to regain their possessions. Oh my goodness, I LOVE your interpretation of Aladdin. As soon as he dismounted, he retired to his own chamber, took the lamp, and summoned the genie as usual, who professed his allegiance. The African magician had a younger brother, who was, if possible, more wicked and more cunning than himself. The magician appointed his time, and desired him to take care that they should be handsome and well polished.
