A Jar of Dreams is a beautiful and poignant story written by Yoshiko Uchida. It tells the tale of a young Japanese-American girl named Rinko, who lives in California during the Great Depression.
Rinko is the daughter of Japanese immigrants and faces many challenges as a result of her heritage. She is often teased and ridiculed by her classmates because of her race, and her parents struggle to make ends meet as they run a small laundromat. The family is in the process of trying to determine the best way to move forward, when Aunt Waka, Rinko's mother's sister, arrives from Japan, with some wisdom that not only reminds Rinko of the importance of her cultural heritage, but the importance of standing up for what one believes in and pursuing their dreams. In this essay I will be explaining her journey to finding who she was. She has depression and although Rinko want to make friends but in the school no one want to close and talk to her. I love Yoshiko Uchida's book.

A Japanese-American girl learns to take pride in herself and her heritage in a time when immigrants were hated for taking American jobs has anything changed? Rinko is shocked because her mother never leaves the kitchen dirty. Though the Great Depression raged, the Uchida family enjoyed comforts because of Takashi's well-paying job and their own frugality. I shared many of the feelings Rinko talked about. Since then several of them have talked with her because they all still live there. They go through some great hardships that will forever change their lives and change their thoughts on things. All she needs to do is believe in her own worth and be the best person she can be. Secondly, and more painful to Rinko: it's how the Japanese are hated among people.

The book takes place during the great depression and at that time Japanese would get a lot of hate. Her father, a barber, hopes to be a mechanic someday. It captures the hearts of the young and old, American or non-American, and even the immigrants who seek for someone that understands them. I've taught fifth grade but worked with children of many ages, and I do miss the classroom! The narrative form chronicles the past and present lives of four main characters; Turtle, Ermilia, Tranquilina and Ana and despite each characters troubled circumstances there is a prevailing theme pushing each character towards rising above the meager success that serves as the status quo for what Chicano youth can attain. .
