A relatively small and radical group, Mennonites endured persecution from various repressive governments in Europe. Her novel crackles with humor; there simply isn't a page where Nomi's mordant sensibilities don't elicit laughter. Nomi obviously knows her own life story, but through her withholding of certain events until the right time or until she remembers it creates a greater motivation for you to finish the book, and tie up all of the loose ends. But the dream of the exciting adventure - a Swiss Family, a club in the East Village with Lou Reed, a first time that isn't disappointing - is hard to let go, especially when reality is so very lame.
