None of that prevented all the sequels, the titles of which I forget. I know he has other issues too; not close enough to have any handle on what they are. Also, David fails to remember any physical descriptions of his mother than could identify her, and, of course, the story cannot be checked, because of the missing details. I bought everything my mother REPEATEDLY told me I was and she was not nice about the way she worded things. However some things Pelzer describes, if they really happened as he describes them, should had left him dead or at least severely health impaired especially without proper medical care. He is the only one he can truly count on in this situation, and this confidence in himself and his abilities keeps him going through the terror he is forced to suffer. I think to some experiences in my childhood that shaped some of my thinking.
These are just my opinions! That much is documented. And he still loved her his abuse made him make poor decisions now he is dead I tried to save him as a little boy no one listened she just lied to cys. To start, the mother neglects Dave by refusing to give him food, and he can barely find something to eat. Since this is a true story and was recorded and the 4th worst abuse case in California. All the way through this disturbing read, there are constant contradictions, and I believe "selected" memories, put together in an attempt to shock, though to what purpose? Also, child maltreatment is a part of this outrageous phenomenon. My favorite part is in the beginning when he got smacked by his mother.

He did seem very determined to make people aware. It was such a talked about book, but it wasn't required in my school, so I just heard about how disturbing and notorious the story was. I was aware of the story because I saw These are some hard books to read. I was so shocked at how a mother can treat her own child so horribly and give her others love.

If one brother says it did and one says it didnt then it probably happened and the second brother has blacked it out. That can impact your later life too and very few get punished for it. If he had, you'd have called the cops. A part of me hopes it was. He was very sneaky and very careful and continued to abuse me for a few more years, you see the courts gave him unsupervised visitation. His father had tried so badly to push him away from his mother but she could still get to him. Dave told his father that she had stabbed him, but he did not do anything about it.

It was so sad. I definitely would not read this one again. Cinders, if you're reading this I hope you don't feel that I'm trying to argue with your opinion. Pelzer's story is interesting. A explicit description of a child's survival through years of abuse. I too believe that Pelzer was likely abused some way.

But, yeah, a memoir is your take on what happened to you. He lived with his parents and his two brothers in Daly City, California, near San Francisco. I truly hope that reading this book can somehow help me to help others; to help heal the world. I've heard a lot about this book since high school, and knowing the subject matter, I went into it knowing I would be going on an emotional ride. The books about child abuse are always weirdly the same. I had vague ideas about the outline of the story and a little knowledge of what to expect, although the alarm bells for me began right at the beginning of the book when he acknowledges that the book is heavily edited by Marsha Donohoe, an editor by profession, in an attempt to make the story seem as if it were told by a child. Now in abuse it is true that he either was or wasn't.
This was a retrospective comment made on an event that was scaled as enormously important, though the response given by the teacher who had been contacted by the editor of this book was scathingly careful to say the least. She calls him names and mean things a mother shouldn't say Dave was the little boys name. This is such a great example of how children any age can make such a different with out asking much. But he could not change and I had so I left him. His mom doesn't treat him like a mom is suppose to: with care.

I simply don't know. This book was about a little boy who had gotton beat all of his life. Apparently there is a lot of controversy surrounding this book as to its validity in terms of what the author went through at the hands of his mother. . I read the first last night, and the second today in less than 2 hours. There wasn't even any blood, yet he screamed, 'Mommy stabbed me! I printed it off, and asked my boyfriend to drive directly to the family hx center so he could read it. Instead, a couple of columnists saw enough discrepancies in the writing to cause them to doubt.
It's hard to say I don't know my famous brother but I don't. If some of you think the story couldn't have happened, I respect your opinions. No doubt they would have avoided any conflicts so that they would not be involved or hurt. A grown man with a toddler mattress?! From the initial pages of the book, the writing style of this author or in fact the woman that was claimed to have edited it and who incidentally was romantically involved with Dave Pelzer at the time , seemed at best amateur, although as stated, it was supposed to be written as if being the thoughts of the child. Things that still bother me today. I found it amazing how this child "Dave Pelzer" had survived serious abuse.

I just want to prove that there are reasonable explanations for these inaccuracies. You will really enjoy this book because it is very detailed and once you open the book and read the first page you will get into it and not stop reading it. I really love this book it wanted to make my cry through out the story. Memories are freaky things. And I am not sure we can truly know which it might be with the current information. I know that everyone's effected differently by these things, and most of Dave's traits that he exhibts in public appearances and book signings DO strike me as a psychologically damaged individual-- but more of that of a manipulator than an abused child. It was very descriptive of a young foster boy who is searching for a place that he can really call "home" The Lost Boy was a very heartfelt book, it will bring some tears to your eyes.
